Are you a moral person? Which stage of moral development have you reached?

This test is strongly based on the work of Psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg while he was a researcher at the University of Chicago. You will find the results to be very helpful in aiding you in future decision-making in your life when faced with a tough dilemma, and also in understanding yourself in relation to the rest of society. As morality is such a complicated and often conflicting thing, so too are the rights and wrongs of some of our daily decisions. Answer the following questions honestly and as you would actually act in each given situation. In some of these situations, all of the options will seem a bit absurd to you. You could probably come up with much better ones. But for the purposes of this test, give your best answer from the options available. If you skip a question, your score will be inaccurate.

They went to the same schools, enjoy the same beer, and even take vacations together. Both of them proposed to their girlfriends on the same day. Since the two of them are pretty much inseparable, they decided to have a bachelor party the night before their respective weddings. Both of their wives were fine with this, but didn't want them doing anything with other women. However, at the bachelor party, two exotic and beautiful women seduced both of them and led them upstairs. Scott ended up cheating on his wife Cassie the day before his wedding. Dominic did not cheat on his wife, and instead ended up leaving the party, disgusted with himself for even going. Scott and Dominic quarreled with each other over the incident later that night. 7 - Melinda is drowning in student loan debt from a useless Philosophy degree that her parents essentially forced upon her. She has always wanted to work as a volunteer to help deliver food to areas of poor Latin American communities like her older sister. But she is mired in so much debt that she is struggling with her two jobs to get by. Melinda cannot hope to reach her goal for a very long time, if ever. One day her friend Tanya, who is an Ultra-Mart greeter, shared a secret that her brother Jake told her. Jake accidentally received $4.3 million out of Ultra-Mart's financial headquarters, where he works, and then decided to just put it in his account. He wants to give most of the money away as soon as possible so that he will not be caught. Tanya is offering Melinda $800,000 of the money. This would solve all of Melinda's financial problems and she could quit her thankless jobs and go to Venezuela to help people in dire circumstances. There is no way she will be caught, and the offer is legitimate. It should also be noted that Ultra-Mart is a multi-billion dollar corporation that allows sweatshop-labor in foreign countries to help keep it's prices down. What should Melinda do?

Melinda should accept the money because

A - She will be using the money with good intent. However, she should consider paying the money back one day when she can afford it, or taking the blame for not turning it in right away when the time is right.
B - She didn't actually steal the money. Jake is the one who will take the blame. He is just helping her out, and she is taking the money off his hands.
C - Her intentions to help poor people in Latin America are more beneficial to the world than the intentions of a large corporation that underpays it's workers and actually contributes to poverty in the same areas.

Melinda should not take the money because

D - Stealing is wrong. Plain and simple.
E - Ultra-Mart contributes to the welfare of its workers by keeping them employed, and also contributes to communities by offering goods and services at a competitive price. They have every right to that money.
F - Technically she is taking money that is not hers. Even though it was offered to her by Jake, who is the one who is first responsible, she is participating in his illegal actions, making her actions also illegal.

8 - Laura and Sven have been married for 8 months. Sven seems more committed to the marriage than Laura is, but Laura still says she wants to be with him. One day, bothered by Sven asking her if she really cared about him and really wanted to stay married to him for the 28th time, Laura told him she was tired of his constant worries about their relationship. She realized that she was feeling stifled and offered an option. The two of them could continue in their relationship if they had an open marriage. That is, they would continue to be together but could also see other people. Sven has never been in an open relationship before, so he is not sure what to do. He really wants to be with Laura, but ideally he wishes the marriage could continue to be exclusive.

Sven should agree to the open marriage because

A - He could pursue other options while staying with Laura to see if she is serious. In this way he might meet someone who is better for him while still leaving open the possibility that Laura will change her mind. He, Laura, and anybody else they see romantically will benefit.
B - It is what Laura wanted, and it would make her happy.
C - It will allow them to stay married and potentially work through this problem. Still, Sven and Laura should seek marriage counseling and then (hopefully) Laura will go back to being committed to him once she saw how she was violating the specialness of their marriage.

Sven should end the marriage with Laura because

D - Everybody would be better off in the end, including Sven's potential future partner.
E - Open relationships within marriages are violation of what marriage is all about.
F - Marriage should be between two people only. Polygamy is wrong.

9 - DeeJay was in a car accident that robbed him of all his vital functions. He's been in a coma for 12 years and is hooked up to a heart and lung machine which keeps him alive. He has no hope to ever wake up and recover. He's basically a vegetable. One of the things DeeJay always used to tell his friends and family before the accident was that if he was ever in such a dismal situation that he'd want the doctors to pull the plug and allow him to die. His father is finally thinking about honoring his son's wishes, but he would have to fight many legal battles to get the doctors to take DeeJay off life support let him pass away. What should DeeJay's father do?

He should fight for his son's wishes and try to get the doctors to pull the plug and allow him to die because

A - Honoring his son's wishes is the right thing to do.
B - If DeeJay is allowed to die, it could set a precedent for others who are in a similar situation and allow them to have control over their own mortality.
C - A person should be allowed to "die with dignity" as long as it is legally performed and goes along with their wishes

He should allow his son to continue being hooked up to the machine to keep him alive because

D - There are laws against doctors who perform "mercy killings." Even though DeeJay may have wanted to die in such a situation, this doesn't mean it is right to actually kill him.
E - It would be murder, and murder is wrong and illegal.
F - It might affect other similar cases. How would the decision to allow DeeJay to die affect other people in the same situation? Would they not be allowed to have a say in their own mortality if they were comatose?

10 - Carl, a former government agent, was poisoned by his own government after revealing corruption and conspiracy. The poison didn't kill him, but instead made him into a deformed mutant. Soon he could not be seen in public as people would ridicule him and make him feel like a monster. Carl took refuge in his lab underground, angry at the world. He eventually took to performing terrible and illegal experiments on people that he would kidnap from the streets. He took out their organs and infected them with diseases to see how long they could withstand the suffering. Carl took impeccable notes, and when he died, scientists found his notes from his experiments. He had killed over 4,000 people, but had found cures for various diseases that mainstream scientists had been struggling with for decades. What should be done with the information obtained from these terrible experiments?

The information should be destroyed because

A - The methods he used to obtain these cures might be duplicated one day by someone else.
B - It was obtained in an illegal manner where people suffered and died at the hands of a madman.
C - It is objectionable to derive benefit from suffering.

The information should be used in mainstream medicine because

D - Even though it was obtained illegally while harming others, it can be used to help people, and eventually be made a part of the health system. It is important that the public be aware of how the research was performed, however, to help prevent something like this from happening in the future.
E - Carl's experiments have created new treatments to diseases which will be an asset to humanity now and in the future.
F - Even though many people died, which is deplorable, society as a whole will benefit from Carl's experiments in the end.

11 - Samantha and Juan are a young couple in their 20's who both go to the University of Kansas. They are both just 2 years away from graduation. Samantha is going into Biology and Juan wants to be an Investment Banker. But one day Samantha announces to Juan that she is 6 weeks pregnant after a routine trip to the doctor. Neither of them is in any kind of financial or professional position to raise a child any time soon. They wouldn't have enough time to care for a child either, and Samantha would have to take significant time off school. Juan, however, has decided that he will handle whatever decision Samantha chooses to make, as he believes that it is her right to make the decision. Neither Samantha or Juan have any family in the country. Assuming that adoption is not an option, what should Samantha do?

Samantha should abort the child because

A - Women have the legal right to abortion. It is Samantha's body. It is a good thing that years of pro-choice movements have allowed women the right to make these decisions.
B - Children should not be raised in an environment where parents cannot provide reasonable care for the child. A child has the basic right to a loving and attentive family.
C - The more children that are born into families that are unable to raise them effectively, the more the world will suffer with children who will grow up in unhealthy environments.

Samantha should keep the child and raise it because

D - If everyone gave up on children because of difficult financial and social circumstances, then how would it affect the human race/population in the future?
E - Abortion is morally wrong. It is not right to murder an unborn child and deny it the right to live. It should be illegal.
F - Imagine the kinds of gifts and contributions to society some of these aborted children could have given to the world. And these unborn children had a right to live.

12 - For the purposes of this question, imagine that the religion mentioned in the following situation is the same as your own. If you are not religious, then the nature of the religion mentioned is not important.

Madison's parents are very religious, and are raising her as a member of the faith that they believe strongly in. Madison, being an inquisitive child of 9, is constantly annoying her parents with questions about how the universe was formed, the nature of evolution, and the existence of God. Her parents answer all of her questions from the frame of reference that their faith teaches them.

Madison's parents are not being fair to her because

A - Her questions are being answered by parents who think they know the truth. This is not uncommon. On a large scale, it would create healthier parent-child relationships if parents allow their kids to ask questions and not force their own beliefs upon them.
B - There are many different religions and beliefs out there. Madison should have the freedom to ask questions and come to her own conclusions about spirituality. This is why we have religious freedom.
C - It is vital that children be allowed to ask questions and disagree with parents about spiritual matters. It gives them the chance to explore their own spirituality. This will allow for greater spiritual tolerance in the world.

Madison's parents are doing the right thing because

D - Her parents are still her parents, and who better to teach Madison the truth about her faith?
E - Children will eventually grow up and come to their own conclusions about spirituality. It is better for children to have definite answers to questions like this because it can be difficult for them to grasp the concept of "open-endedness".
F - Too many kids rely on corrupting influences to answer some of these questions, like television and advertising. Parents are ideal teachers, and they have the right to decide what is best for their children to learn.
